Why batteries are the most commonly excluded component — and what to demand instead.
Batteries are consumables with a known degradation curve, which is exactly why many plans exclude them: the 'failure' is predictable. But predictable doesn't mean cheap — a 421 Wh humanoid pack is a serious line item, and thermal events are a safety issue, not just a cost.
What to look for: capacity-threshold replacement (e.g., replacement when capacity drops below 70–80% of rated), swelling and thermal-event coverage, and charger/power-connector inclusion. What's usually excluded: damage from third-party chargers and improper storage — both legitimate exclusions.
Shipping matters too: replacement packs ship as UN3480 Class 9 hazardous goods. A plan that covers the battery but not hazmat-compliant shipping is covering half the cost.

Because degradation is predictable — insurers prefer sudden failures. But predictable wear is exactly what owners need covered, so push for capacity-threshold replacement terms.
